2008 Volkswagen Passat
Good:
1. Responsive and refined engines
2. Quiet, refined interior
3. Attractive interior
4. Top safety protection
5. Available all-wheel drive
Bad:
1. No Bluetooth hands-free calling interface
2. Premium fuel is recommended
3. Excessive road noise with 17” or 18”-inch wheels
4. Pricey VR6 models can top $40,000
5. All-wheel drive only offered with V-6
2008 Volkswagen’s mid-size Passat sedan received a complete makeover for the 2006 model year, then the 2007 edition added a wagon model (which is covered in a separate review) and some new tech features, like Adaptive Cruise Control. For 2008 VW Passat gets modest changes, including simplified trim levels: Turbo, Komfort, Lux, and VR6.

The 2008 VW Passat is available with a choice of engines and this time around we’re finding ourselves favoring the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in some respects over the 3.6-liter V6.

The 2008 Volkswagen Passat is a mid-size sedan similar in size to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 200 horsepower that should satisfy most needs, while returning 23/32 city/highway mpg with a six-speed manual transmission. The optional 3.6-liter narrow-angle V6 growls when pressed and delivers robust torque, allowing the Passat to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds.

All versions of the 2008 Volkswagen Passat are equipped with front and side (thorax) air bags designed to protect the driver and front passenger as well as side curtain air bags that cover both rows of seating. In addition, all versions offer optional side (thorax) air bags for the two outboard rear-seat seating positions.
